Toshiba Thrive (16GB)

  by Eric Franklin (cnet.com) - Jul 2011

cnet.com

Tablets are generally expected to be "thin and light" small computers with unobtrusive interfaces. Some tablets are thinner and lighter than others, however. While we've praised tablets like the iPad 2 and Galaxy Tab 10.1 for their sleekness and dinged...

The Toshiba Thrive's very aggressive pricing gives it an advantage over most other tablets. Its grooved back, full HDMI and USB support, full SD card slot, and replaceable battery justify its very bulky design. Also, its built-in file management system...

The Thrive's bulky design and hefty weight are not for everyone. Also, awkward back camera placement and a difficult panel removal process make us wish more time had been spent in the design phase. The LED lights on the bezel can be distracting

The Toshiba Thrive is a bulky but aggressively priced Honeycomb tablet that earns its girth with full port support and a removable battery.

Toshiba Thrive Review: A Tablet Edges Closer to the Ideal

  by Melissa J. Perenson (pcworld.com) - Jul 2011

pcworld.com

The Toshiba Thrive feels chunky compared with the svelte, lightweight market leaders, namely the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Apple iPad 2. But tucked neatly along the Thrive's edges are its secret weapons: an SD Card slot, plus Mini-USB, USB, and HDMI...

Removable battery, replaceable back cover ; Sturdy design ; SDXC Card slot, plus USB, HDMI, and mini-USB ports

Feels heavy, and stands thicker than most ; Stereo speakers lack fullness, sound tinny

The Thrive from Toshiba is the first tablet to fully harness the interoperable power of Android, but it falls short in some key design points.

If you've seen one Honeycomb tablet, you might well imagine you'd seen them all — most every current Android slate boasts a 10.1-inch, 1280 x 800 screen, a dual-core 1GHz Tegra 2 chip, 1GB of RAM, and a small chunk of flash...

Full-sized HDMI, USB and SD card ports ; Android 3.1 ; Decent screen

Too little bang for the buck ; Feels bulky and cheap

We'll wait for a more smartly designed tablet to integrate full-size ports before we lay our money on the table

Heavy Duty: Toshiba Thrive Tablet Reviewed

  by Michael Calore (wired.com) - Jul 2011

wired.com

Being the fattest kid in class sounds like a silly way to differentiate. But the extra bulk of Toshiba's Thrive tablet allows room for some attractive features.

A solid Honeycomb tablet with extra sauce on the side. The back pops off, so you can replace the battery and add a dash of color. Extra ports for storage, connectivity and input devices. Not tied to a mobile carrier

Did we mention its bigger and heavier than the competition? Video, scrolling and animations aren’t as smooth as they should be. The 5-megapixel camera on the back shoots photos and videos, but it excels at neither. Toshiba’s pre-installed e-book...

Toshiba enters the tablet market with the Thrive, a 10-inch Android device with full-size HDMI and USB ports.

The Toshiba Thrive is one of the most attractive tablets we've tested, and it offers the most flexibility with its myriad of full-size ports and removable battery--just keep in mind that this also adds to its size and weight. Regardless, the tablet's 6...

Award: RECOMMENDED PRODUCT

The iPad is the gold standard for tablets today. Hordes of PC and phone makers are vigorously trying to manufacture tablets that look and feel like Apple's success story. In the case of Samsung, it's Galaxy Tab 10.1 is so similar to an iPad that a...

Removable battery ; SD card reader ; Full-size USB and HDMI ports ; Fast charging AC adapter ; Good suite of software ; Respectable specs ; Rubber grip is easy to hold

Heavy and thick ; Screen picks up fingerprints ; Cameras are oddly placed ; Battery cover difficult to remove

The Toshiba Thrive didn't impress us with its looks, but it has won us over with its software, flexibility, and PC-like approach to the Android tablet.

Toshiba Thrive

  by Dana Wollman (engadget.com) - Jul 2011

This isn't the first time Toshiba has showed up fashionably late to a party. Back in 2009, long after most every other consumer electronics maker big and small had jumped on the netbook bandwagon, the company belatedly released its first mini, the...

Relatively inexpensive ; Full USB and HDMI ports, SDXC reader ; Useful file manager and printing app

Chunky design and chintzy build quality ; Short battery life ; Weak cameras

An SD card slot and full-sized USB and HDMI ports don't fully make up for the fact that the Thrive is bulky, cheaply built and doesn't last long on a charge.

Toshiba Thrive Review

The Toshiba Thrive isn't a sexy tablet. It's plump, homely, a little bit awkward, and although smart and supportive, you won't be showing it off much to your buddies. But if you're reading this review, you probably already know that. You're considering...

Either way, the Thrive is a unique option when it comes to your tablet purchase and will have a warm place for some of you out there. It reminds us of what’s nice about the Android platform, and that’s options. You can have the sexy runway Samsung...

A 1GHz Tegra 2 processor plus Nvidia GeForce graphics card make this a fast tablet

Fast processor ; Removable back cover ; Full-size USB and HDMI ; Good movie playback ; Great battery life

Weak screen ; Bulky and heavy ; Screen cracked ; Average design

The Toshiba Thrive 8GB version costs $400 in the US, which is the same as the Asus Eee Pad Transformer. We tested the 16GB version of the tablet, which costs $430. Toshiba hasn't yet announced a UK launch date or price. Next Page: Features

Perhaps girth is the trade-off for top-notch connectivity. Surrounding the 10.1-inch, 16:10, 1,280-by-800-pixel touch screen is an array of ports and outputs that makes the Thrive more useful than most tablets. The top panel (when in horizontal mode)...

Integrated USB, mini-USB, HDMI ports, and SDXC card slot. User-removable battery can be swapped out, replaced. Honeycomb OS is generally well-designed, excels at multitasking

As thick as a two competing tablets stacked together; the bulkiest of all Honeycomb tablets thus far. Not competitively priced

With a removable battery and full USB functionality, the Toshiba Thrive is better outfitted for business than most Honeycomb tablets, but its bulkiness is bound to be a turn-off for some.

Works like a charm, even better than iPad

  by JJohnsonBMX (cnet.com) - Feb 2012

In the past year, I ventured into the tablet world and purchased 1 iPad 2, 3 Kindle Fires, 1 Nook Color and Toshibe Thrive 16GB. At any given time, my household have all these tablets charged.

Toshiba Thrive is very responsive. Loaded with Honeycomb 3.1 ; Awesome display, 1280x800, really bright ; Standard hardware set (Tegra 2 processor, 10.1" screen, 1 GB RAM) works very well ; The entire unit looks solid and very well made

Antivirus app that comes along cannot be removed without rooting ; Speakers are rather too soft

  by revmarty1 (cnet.com) - Nov 2011

A great 10 inch tablet with all the bells and whistles.

All of the connections you could ask for ; Toshiba updates software assiduously - just got the Android 3.2 update ; Plenty of softward goodies to get started and room to grow ; Programs load fast and run smoothly

Stereo speakers are a nice plus, but still a little tinny

Sometimes you just don't want an iPad or iPad wanna be.

  by stork347 (cnet.com) - Sep 2011

Much more practical for work and play for me than IOS, expected Toshiba quality.

Love the responsiveness, external ports and screen. Easy to use USB keyboard or jump drive, add extra memory, etc. Agree with design decisions: more like computer than large iPhone. Has all the apps that I need or want

Learning new operating system, could use better documentation for both Android operating system and individual apps

It has many more features than the iPad2 and a more stable operating system. More free apps that I can use. It is easier to use and hasn't crashed like the iPad 2 did
