Rio Go-Video DVR4000

  by Darren Gladstone (cnet.com) - Jan 2002

Review: Sonicblue's Go-Video DVR4000 caters to the masses. If you want just the basics of watching DVDs and videotapes without a hassle, that's exactly what you get. The problem, however, is that you'll be paying a lot and getting few features in...

Relatively slim design; clean front panel; one-touch copying of DVD-R content to VHS; full suite of outputs

Less than ideal remote; menu system could be better; no MP3 support; slightly overpriced

With a higher price and fewer features than what you'll find on competing players, you'd be better off with Samsung's DVD-V1000.

I've actually had two GoVideo systems, this one, and a GoVideo HT2015, that one actually lasted about 3 years, but the DVD feature stopped working due to the rubber band pulley that motorizes the disc tray, it heated up and over stretched, fixed that,...

It lasted one year and had some nice features for the time. Also got a nice pair of 8Ohm speakers

The WORST 5.1 Surround sound DVD/VCR combo I have ever owned, lost DVD capability, then VCR, then the Sound ; Spent $200 basically just for speakers

overpriced, unreliable

It will play DVDs and tape TV shows. The tuner part of the unit seems OK but nothing spectacular

Overpriced for what you get, but it's better than the DVR5000 which was the most absolutely worthless electronic toy that I've ever had any experience with. It slowly just stopped playing any DVD discs and the company was absolutely useless in getting a r

"Great idea that just doesn't work."

What a great way to be able to back up old VHS tapes to DVD - too bad that this solution simply doesn't work. Tech service was less helpful. They simply suggested returning it as a defective unit and getting a new one - which I did, and it did the same

I bought and tried to record dozens of DVD's and even the discs that were recorded on this machine wouldn't play on it! Stay away from this cool looking gizmo unless you have the luck of the Irish and happen to get a good one!

1. It does give DVD and Video tape playback in one unit. 2. There is no 2.

1. About 2 in 10 DVDs will not play in this machine. Mfr. claims this is NOT a defect. These disks play just fine on other machines. No observable surface defects in the disks that won't play. 2. Even though the deck will copy from DVD to tape, it won
