Easy to use

I bought this card for an old PC I've converted to a linux home server / backup server. I used the card to add a SATA hard drive to the machine so I can store and backup data from other PC's on my network. Works great.

Very easy to use - plug and play setup. Work fine - no problems

no luck with Ubuntu 10.10

Thought I'd try a cheap upgrade my internal storage as I didn't really want to replace my (ancient, circa 2004) motherboard just now. Guess I'll have to upgrade... It's possible that my problems are driver-related (there's been problems with sata_sil...

Two channels, includes cable, chipset has supposedly good and stable Linux support and tends to be used in a lot of motherboards

Doesn't work with any of the three SATA drives I tested (100GB Toshiba, 160GB WD Caviar Blue, and 1TB WD Caviar Green). All three drives work fine in an external SATA dock. Even when flashed to last stable firmware (4.3.84; 4.5.02 is a joke). Not...

possibly limited support on linux

i pulled these out of service after a few months. it took two days to locate and fix the corrupted files these left on the backup images. they're useless under all builds i've ever tried. if it's a kernel support issue, they'd probably work fine on...

two ports ; cheap ; fires up and appears to work

spews errors consistently and randomly, causing data corruption and bringing the machine down about once every couple days. channel/channel transfer reliability is actually worse than from channel to another controller ; i have two of these, and both...

Works Flawlessly

  by CG (newegg.com) - Jul 2010

There are 2 versions of this controller, or at least it seems that way. The one I have is based off of the sil3512 and it seems there is a older version with the same part number that has a different chip-set and may have caused issues to some people...

Plugged it in and it was immediately detected by Ubuntu 9.04 with the 1TB WD drive attached to it. Attached second drive and have had no issues

Limited to 1.5 TB devices (less for older firmware) ; No ability to upgrade firmware on this card

Working so far

I installed this card in to my Gigabyte Socket 370 motherboard and connected a 640 GB western digital hard drive. Ubuntu server 9.10 recognized the hard drive. I didn't have to install the driver. The speed is better than my IDE hard drive. Linux disk...

Every time when computer reboot, it waits 5 sec on Raid control menu. I couldn't get rid of this. But it's minor issue

Great card for the money!!!

Don't have the chance to try out the RAID options yet...but I'm sure they work. Other than that, EXCELLENT card! If I could give 10 eggs, I would!

Great card! Less than 5 minutes to install and ready to go! (From opening the Newegg box to being installed and ready to use). Windows XP SP3 recognized it right away and automatically installed the drivers! I didn't even have to stick in the driver...

Could have been frEEeEee! LOL

Works with Linux as is

I added a 260GB sata drive. Linux (Ubuntu V8.04) saw the drive right away without any drivers or tweaking.

Low price. It worked very well in a old Compaq Presario that I use as a simple Linux home server

None that I can think of

Drivers would help...

  by Hardware Reaver (newegg.com) - Jul 2009

After hours of trying to sift through the provided CD, I gave up and bought an Adaptec SATA PCI card.

Fairly simple, actually comes with a SATA cable, unlike most others

Drivers fail. Not usable as boot drive controller under Vista
