Award: Empfehlung der Redaktion!

HP has made great improvements with the MediaSmart EX495 device based on Windows Home Server, enough so that it's easy to overlook the minor irritations.

The best Windows Home Server interface yet. Improved Apple support. Great performance

HP specific software was buggy with Windows 7. No way to set a static IP address

The HP MediaSmart Server EX495 has no RAID, IP camera, or printer support. It doesn't accept hard drives with data already on it. The server can't do backup or recovery for multiple PCs at a time and it takes a long time to set up. The server's on/off...

In 2004, I was working on my second film, The Virtual Kevin Project. The film was a documentary that required a huge amount of hard drive space to store all the data and clips that had been imported, along with all the FCP editing information. I had...

I was really impressed with this little server that doesn't take up much space, but is well-ventilated, well-made, and runs effortlessly. Despite its Achilles Heel, it's an excellent system that really deserves your consideration.

  by Ryan McLaughlin (justechn.com) - Apr 2010

HP recently released two new versions of their MediaSmart server, the EX490 and the EX495. These servers have new hardware including faster processors, more memory, and higher capacity hard drives. They also come with the new 3.0 version of the...

The improvement that HP has made are substantial and worthwhile. Fortunately for those that have older MediaSmart Servers, HP has made the new software available to all. Unfortunately, on the older hardware the new functionality probably won’t be as...

The EX495 has upgradability, lots of features, and speedy performance, but a lengthy installation process, software bugs, and a high price mar this otherwise excellent media server.

Robust media server; upgradable capacity; speedy transfers; seamless media gathering from connected systems; full Mac support

Expensive; time-consuming, potentially tricky installation; flaky software; install must be done on a Windows PC

Double your display real estate by adding a second monitor. It's a snap: Here's how
